How to Renew a Maryland Handgun Permit
The initial Maryland Handgun Permit expires on the last day of the permit holder’s birth month following two (2) years after the date the permit is issued and for successive periods of three (3) years each.
RENEWAL TIMING
Your renewal application can not be submitted more than 90 days from expiration of the permit. Maryland State Police will send out renewal reminders via email to active permit holders. Expired permit applications must be submitted as an original application. This includes all original application fees, fingerprints, training, and documentation requirements.
TRAINING:
Unless exempt, renewal applicants must successfully complete an approved 8-Hour HGP Renewal Training including range qualification with a Maryland Qualified Handgun Instructor.
Renewal training must be completed within the previous two years of submitting your renewal application. The renewal course must include instruction on state firearm law, home firearm safety, handgun mechanisms and operation, and a component that requires the applicant to demonstrate gun safety and proficiency with a minimum score of 70% accuracy.
You will be required to upload a completed and signed MSP 29-14 Certified Qualification Score Sheet to the renewal application.
